13/01/08 -- Copany Rovers U16's 2-1 Glenea United U16's -- Roger Leonard, Shane Walsh -- Venue: Killowen Park

Copany Rovers came out on top in this opening match in Group A of the Donegal Schoolboys U 16 Champions League yesterday afternoon as they narrowly overcame Glenea United in a keenly contested affair.

The home team grabbed the lead when they were awarded a free kick for a foul by Rodgers on Jonathan Ward. The visitors had no complaints about the decision and indeed were fortunate that a penalty hadn't been awarded. Their relief was short lived however, as Leonard's expertly taken free kick finished in the bottom right hand corner.

The lively McGeever was everywhere as he tried to drag Glenea back into the match. On 60 minutes he cleverly created space for himself as he received the ball from a Gallagher throw, his shot from 25 yards took a deflection and just fell the wrong side of Copanys right hand post and out for a corner.

Copanys second goal, on 65 minutes, came a little against the run of play. Glenea had been pressing since half time, creating a few half chances. However, their inablity to clear a routine corner resulted in Copanys second goal. Ward and Leonard combined to create the corner which Glenea could only half clear. The ball spilled to Shane Walsh and he made no mistake from eight yards out.

Copany may have felt at that stage they were home and dry but Glenea had other ideas and the began to pin Copany inot their own half, with McGeever, O Brien, Ferry and Coll all combining to ensure that Copany had a nervous last ten minutes.

Glenea did pull a goal back, but it was a little too late. Again McGeever was involved, combining with O Brien. McGeever found space for himself on the edge of the box, his left foot shot was too strong for the keeper and Glenea had found a lifeline.

A few minutes of injury time was largely played out in the Glenea half of the field, as Copany hung on to their slender advantage and saw out the remaining minutes to record a great opening win in the competition.
