An opportunistic strike from James Boyle ten minutes from time gave Keadue a victory in this Milford Inn Division 1 basement battle.
The match was a real war of attrition from the off, with both sides competing physically in a good-natured encounter, but struggling to deal with ball retention on the bumpy Killowen Park surface. It was Keadue who nosed in front on 18 minutes, when the evergreen Danny Doogan pounced on a defensive mistake and forced the ball into the net with the aid of a deflection. Keadue doubled their lead less than a minute later, when Doalty Boyle showed good pace and determination to break through the Copany rearguard, and fire past Benny Mundy in the Copany nets. Mundy atoned for the second goal by then making two excellent saves as the Dungloe men threatened to run riot.
Copany grabbed a lifeline on the stroke of half time when they were awarded a penalty. A good run and pass by Dale Duncan played in the bombing full back Gary McCafferty, but as he broke into the box a mistimed tackle brought him to ground. Francie Johnston stepped up, but although his weak penalty was saved, he saved his blushes by being first to the rebound to hammer home from close range.
Copany upped the tempo somewhat in the second half, and Francie Johnston was unfortunate to get an unkind bobble when though on goal after a fine through ball from Gary McCafferty on 55 minutes. The bobble forced him closer to goal, where the ‘keeper rushed out, narrowing the angle to make a fine point blank save. Ryan Kerrigan then fizzed an effort narrowly over the bar for Copany after breaking through the defence on 60 minutes. Keadue hit the bar shortly after from a bullet back post header, but Copany found their equaliser on 64 minutes. Gary McCafferty’s free kick was flicked on by the imposing figure of Alan McGirr, and James Walsh headed into the bottom corner of the net.
McGirr then went close with a fizzing free kick which forced the Keadue keeper into a smart save on 72 minutes, before James Boyle’s strike ten minutes from the death secured the points for Keadue. Keadue had a chance to wrap up proceedings when a striker broke free on 82 minutes, but found Benny Mundy equal to the task.
Copany forced a flurry of late corners, but despite Alan McGirr and James Walsh threatening from a number of floated corners by McCafferty, Keadue held firm to secure the points.
Alan McGirr and Gary McCafferty impressed for the home side. A good team performance from Keadue.
