20/09/09 @ 1:00PM Donegal Town 5-0 Copany Rovers Venue: Hospital Field, Donegal Town
Copany suffered a heavy defeat to local rivals Donegal Town, losing by five goals to nil on the new surface at The Hospital Pitch in Donegal Town.
The early stages of this match saw both sides size each other up, but it was Donegal Town who took the lead on 34 minutes. A misguided looping cross put Stephen Doherty on the backfoot, and although he did well to keep the ball out of the net, an onrushing Donegal striker was free to nod in from close range.
Four minutes later, The Cobras were up against it, as Paul Clarke was harshly shown the red card after an innocuous collision with a Donegal Town defender, much to both players bemusement.
The unfolding events seemed to get to the Copany players, and as their heads dropped, JP Byrne doubled Donegals advantage with a close range header after he was allowed far too much luxury in the box on the stroke of half time.
A double subsitution at the break did little to quell the tide of wave after wave of Donegal attacks in the second half, and they scored three without reply in the second period. Copany however, will feel all of the goals scored in this game were avoidable, and will need to raise their game starting next Sunday against St. Catherines.
Donegal maintained their 100% record in the league with this fine win against Copany in the local derby.
On 10 minutes Terry Doc had a goalbound shot well saved by the Copany keeper. However on 15 minutes Doc made amends and scored with a close range header after the ball rebounded off the crossbar. On the half hour Donegal doubled their lead when JP Byrne scored with a header from a corner.
With Copany a man down for the second half Donegal took advantage and 5 minutes in went 3-0 up with another Terry Doc goal. The Doc got his hatrick on the hour when he shot to the net after fine work by Stevie Curneen to lay on the pass. With 5 minutes remaining Conor Mc Monagle made it 5-0 with his goal at the near post.
Best for Donegal Pauric Mc Glynn Pauric Harvey and Danny Mc Garrigle and for Copany Alan Mc Girr starred but credit to them for always trying after going down to 10 men.
