The bare complement of 11 players proved to be sufficient on the day as Copany produced an excellent win over Kerrykeel '71 at Rabs Park. The visitors had the first chance, as David Graham - the deepest lying center forward in the history of the sport based on this encounter - almost got on the end of a Paul Clarke center after five minutes. Clarke showed tenacity to win the ball and drive down the left but his center fell just behind the inrushing Graham who was unable to adjust his feet to supply the finishing touch. Kerrykeel began to take control of the match at their excellent new complex, and fashioned a couple of half chances early on but found the commanding Gary Ward in alert form on a couple of occasions. David Graham thought he had put the Cobras ahead on 22 minutes. A free kick won deep in the Kerrykeel half was taken quickly and cleverly by Stephen Doherty, who sent Graham through, and he finished with typical smartness. However, the referee very harshly pulled back the play for offside, and deny what should have been a cleverly improvised goal. David Graham then curled a delightful free kick from 20 yards, that was only denied by the frame the bar on 26 minutes after Glen Harron won a free from showing good trickery down the right flank. Despite Kerrykeel having more of the posession, Copany took the lead on 40 minutes when Paul Clarke ended his particular goal drought. Glen Duncan won a header on halfway which was flicked on by Clarke to Paul Patton, who returned the favour with a well weighted first time through ball to Clarke, and he did the rest, finishing with aplomb by clipping the ball over the advancing 'keeper, putting the ball in the corner of the net to leave Copany one up at the break. Kerrykeel started the second half brightly, and really should have equalised when Johnny Friel put the ball over the crossbar from six yards from a teasing center down the right. Kerrykeel continued to have much of the ball in the second half, but struggled to create chances against a well-disciplined Copany side, who - bouyed by the return of the commanding and vocal Alan McGirr - grafted extremely hard and put theories of self-preservation on the back of their minds considering the lack of substitutes. The closest Kerrykeel came to an equaliser was a 25 yard daisy-cutter from Johnny Friel which clipped the outside of Gary Ward's post. With Kerrykeel pressing high up the pitch, Copany found joy on 86 minutes when David Graham managed to isolate the Kerrykeel right-back on the half way line, clipping the ball around his right and running around his left, and darting free towards goal, before putting the finishing touch to the game by slotting into the near corner with his trusty left boot to grab a goal his industrious performance deserved, and seal the three points for the Cobras. Glen Duncan was best in another good team effort for Copany, doing a sterling job on the dangerous Fergal Callaghan, with Johnny Friel literally kicking and screaming his way to the top of the Kerrykeel pile.
