They often say talk is cheap, and at 1am after a Saturday night outside the Abbey it's especially far from a premium, but as usual there were no mincing of words from Drumbar United veteran Aiden 'Butch' Cassidy in the aftermath of the friendly between Drumbar and Copany earlier in the day.
In 2005, 'Butch' captained the National Bar to victory in the Interfirms Mens final of Brendan Cassidy Memorial Cup after a 2-1 win over the Old Castle Bar after four years of trying. All made the sweeter for 'Butch' winning the competition in honour of his late father Brendan. In a candid conversation, the midfield anchor 'Butch' professed - contrary to public perception - his soft spot for Copany Rovers, a club for which he played underage football with when he was simply known as Aiden Cassidy. Having had many a fierce midfield battle with Thomas Given over the years, 'Butch' pointed to one relatively new kid on the block for the Cobras as the future of Copany Rovers FC - David Graham - but not before having a cheeky dig at his no-show for the recent Brian McCormick Cup match. After again witessing first hand the marvel of the wing maverick earlier in the day, 'Butch' implored Graham to express his talents over the course of the season telling him: "You need to be going for the player of the year, not just the team, but the CT Ball Division 2 Player of the Year." On Copanys success over Drumbar, streching their consecutive friendly wins over Drumbar to three, 'Butch' remained unfazed. "You can keep winning the friendlies, and we'll keep winning the competitive matches". The big man has a point, as it's over seven years since Copany last secured a victory over their nearest neighbours. Although, obviously, they shall not play each other in a competitive match this campaign, here's hoping for a competive encounter in the not too distant future - just not in the CT Ball Division 2! Best of luck to Aiden and Drumbar in the Milford Inn Division 1 this campaign.
